The Pride of the Sun Jewel
In the beginning, Tess created the Sun Jewel, ruler and mother of all pets. Her beauty and grace was obvious to all who laid eyes on her. The golden collar around her neck and the golden bracelets about her leg were emblems of her superiority. In the beginning, when she strolled by the other pets, they would bow to her and speak of the marvelous air about her.
"What a beautiful creature," they would say in wonder. "I wish I were as amazing as her."
None of them would notice, however, the two timid wolves following in her footsteps. Her brother on the right, and her sister on the left. The sister was named Sun Back, for adorning her back was a glowing sun. But it was shrouded by the brightness of the Sun Jewel. The brother was the Non Jewel, named for what he lacked instead of what he had. He had no golden collar or shining bracelets. He lived in silence as his sister gained fame.
That was all right for a time, but one day, as the Sun Jewel was strolling by the others in her usual fashion, a new dog appeared, one she had never seen before. He assertively marched right up to her.
"What are you doing here? Move out of my way," Sun Jewel exclaimed.
"Not until you tell me why you're so famous," the strange dog replied.
"I was born that way. It's just who I am," said Sun Jewel. "Now move so I can get through."
The strange dog laughed. "Don't you even care who I am?" His deep blue eyes met hers for an instant.
"No," Sun Jewel lied.
The strange dog replied anyway. "I'm Tiger Dog. If you don't know me now, you will eventually." He laughed again, a gentle yet maniacal laugh, then trotted off, grinning to himself.
He's probably just glad he met me, Sun Jewel thought to herself.
Later that night, Sun Jewel was lounging on her lavish bed when an often overlooked picture on her bedside table caught her eye. She could see herself, standing on the left. Odd, because she was usually in the center of every photograph. To the right and middle were Sun Back and Non Jewel. They seemed so...happy. This was something that Sun Jewel had not seen in a very long while. She thought about when they were still young and carefree, didn't care about rarity labels or demand or any of the real world. She kind of missed that in a way.
She turned suddenly to see Sun Back standing there. She tried to speak, but Sun Back only looked at her grudgingly and silently crept away. Sun Jewel reflected on her day and with a sigh drifted off to sleep.
The next morning greeted Sun Jewel with bright rays of sun. But it wasn't coming from the sky. Peering down from her bedroom balcony, Sun Jewel saw a truly magnificent sight: Sun Back, wearing sparking diamonds other precious stones all up and down her body. She wore a glittering white gown, with the back showing to reveal the sun she wore so proudly now. Its golden rays illuminated the crowd of animals hurrying around her to get a closer look.
Sun Jewel, feeling both curious and furious, rushed down the grand marble staircase of her home.
"Sun Back! This is my role to play, not yours!"
Sun Back whipped around. Her submissive nature was no more.
Sun Jewel stood as tall as she could, but no one seemed to notice her. Her mind went blank. Her vision blurred with tears.
"Doesn't it feel awful to be neglected by your siblings?" Said a voice behind her.
It was her brother, Non Jewel.
"Make this lunatic give up her fancy dress now!" Sun Jewel screeched. But Non Jewel only laughed. It reminded her of Tiger Dog's laugh, mysterious and insane.
"Care about someone else other than yourself for a change," he then said simply. He strolled away, following Sun Back. She was walking next to another dog, she noticed, their tails intertwined.
Sun Jewel sighed. I guess I could give it up just for today, she thought. Besides, when was the last time Sun Back got any attention at all?
Out of the corner of her eye, she spied Tiger Dog again, his three tails swishing slowly back and forth. A crowd larger than any Sun Jewel had ever had followed close behind him. Tiger Dog growled at them gently and shook his tails to shoo them away. He came and sat next to Sun Jewel. She could feel his warm breath on her gold and white fur, sending a shiver through her spine. She stared into his ocean eyes and knew she had found someone who she could care about.
