My first CS Fanfic. The story of how butterfly wolves got their wings, inspired by Aboriginal Dreamtime stories. I hope you like it. The butterwolf in this is Percy, my oldest. And Taiko, I love him. In this, they used to be called mini-wolves, not butterfly wolves.
Percy darted through the bushes, her light frame allowing her speedy escape from predators but her bulbous tail snagging on bushes.
She ripped it free for the umpteenth time and tried to focus on putting one foot before the other, but the crashing noises behind her said she would be caught.
She finally reached a clearing, breathing ragged and flanks heaving. She'd lost the large Malk wolf a few minutes ago, and had continued to be safe.
The flower patterned mini-wolf flopped down. She was growing weak from constantly being chased... mini's were the easiest prey to catch in the Chicken Realm.
The horses could run and were large, Malk wolves were just... at the top of the chain, rats could easily scurry into crevices, spiders were just ick, owls could fly and the others had claws to defend themselves.
Even the ponies had a good kick in them. But minis were just weak. They had no fighting skills, were too small to hunt anything except the occasional rat and had no means of escape from their enemies but running.
It was horrible, and every day Percy found it harder to survive. She scavenged food from the friendly PPS dogs, who were quite generous.
The clearing was lovely, with a stream bubbling along one side and the edge ringed by willows and clumps of fern. The she wolf took a few steps onto the soft grass, and then continued to the edge of the stream.
She took a few laps of water before sitting and watching the clouds' reflection in the water. They drifted past lazily, Percy feeling a burst of envy. They never worried about danger, and just floated by without a care in the world.
She wished she could fly; escape to the heavens and soar above her troubles, shedding them like water off a Satamoru Staff Pet's scales.
Percy jumped up, determination coursing through her veins. She darted to the other end of the clearing, halted, and then ran full force to the stream.
She leapt as high as she could, the wind lifting her for a moment of freedom before she touched down on the other side of the stream. That- that had been amazing!
The mini wolf flopped down and remembered the feeling of being one with the sky for just a heartbeat, the sun flashing through her and hope raising her. She tried to burn the image into her mind.
After a few minutes she got up and skipped to the stream, peering in for fish. A golden flicker told her everything, and she darted in a paw to hook it out.
She ate the fish quickly after praying for a rebirth in the Pound, then sighed and lay down in the grass, falling asleep with the images of soaring high in her mind.
Percy awoke the next morning to find- gah! Another mini wolf was curled up beside her! By the scent, it was a male, a 2012 and... ah. He had that mystical, dark scent of a Halloween creature.
She blushed, stood up and jumped away, embarrassed that she'd been staring at a stranger.Apparently it had woken up the black-furred male with red stripes. He blinked open his red eyes and looked up at her sceptically.
"Hey, Percy. Remember me?" She stared at him, confused. Should she? The male chuckled and stood up, shaking out his fur. "I'm Taiko. I saw you when we were Akitara's pets."
Percy felt an explosion of memories hit her. How she'd been a wishlist, then when Akitara had adopted her she'd been left alone, the oldest pet she'd owned.
She had been forced to watch each new batch adopted, a hold in her heart, until finally in December every user had disappeared under mysterious circumstances and the animals had been set wild.
Taiko came up and prodded her with a paw. "Can I stay near you?" She nodded hurridly. It was safer. He let out a short sigh. "Good, I was so worried. Hmm. Actually- you haven't said a word."
They both burst into laughter before Percy shyly admitted, "Well... I usually keep my thoughts inside, I have so many things to say..." She trailed off and let out a little giggle.
Taiko chuckled and nudged her playfully with his tail. Percy squeaked and tumbled onto the soft grass. She pretended to glare at the 2012 pet, putting on a haughty voice. "Weeeelll then sir, I suppose I'm not worth your time."
Silence ensued for a moment before the two mini wolves burst out in laughter. Taiko flopped down and rolled onto his back, gazing into the sky. "So what are your dreams?"
Percy twisted around to see him, unsure if he was joking. Apparently not.
"Well... I-"
"Dude! Stop saying 'well' at the start of everything!" She let out a huff and smacked him lightly.
"I don't exactly talk much so I haven't had a chance to fix my speaking habits!" He chuckled.
"Ok, ok. Go on."
"Um... I've always dreamt of flying. We... we aren't exactly the strongest species, so if we could fly... we'd be happy, y'know?" Taiko considered for a moment, tilting his head.
"Let's fly, then." Percy whipped her head around.
"What?!"
"I mean it."
"Ok, how?" Her voice was honest, but tinged with doubt. How on earth did the crazy 2012 think that they could fly?
"We should find wings."
This time Percy rolled her eyes and sighed.
"That's crazy."
"Is it?"
"Yes."
The argument went on for about two hours, and they actually stared exploring ways to fly. Wings... seemed to be the best option, but what wings?
Taiko was prancing around, trying to stay in the air for more than a moment. IT was quite entertaining... until it happened.
Two sets of huge butterfly wings drifted down on the breeze. Percy froze. Taiko froze. They watched as the bright things fluttered down, then approached them warily.
The 2010 sniffed one set, with shades of blue, purple and pink. The colour palette matched hers exactly. The other set seemed made for Taiko as he let out an excited yap and chased his tail for a moment.
"Seeseeseeseeseeseeseeseeseesee?! THIS IS IT!!!" Percy imagined that if anyone were to read what he'd said, it would look like the text talk of some self-obsessed idiot.
She smiled.
"Ok, well how do we get them on?" He shrugged.
"Eat them?" Unfortunately Percy was one to take things quite seriously and she'd gulped down both wings before he could say "STOP".
